Argentina Versus Serbia World Cup Preview

Gelsenkirchen June 16, 2006 - Argentina/Serbia

My Pick: Argentina

South American giants Argentina will be looking to make it 2 wins out of as many games when they play Serbia and Montenegro in Gelserkirchen on Friday.

Former Boca Juniors coach Carlos Bianchi has tipped them to win the World cup thi s summer and the team will be keen to prove that right. Jose Pekerman's men produced a determined performance to see off the challenge of Didier Drogba led Ivory Coast in their opening game. Playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme had a brilliant outing against the Elephants and will be keen to continue his performance. Upfront Pekerman may again start with Saviola and Crespo with Riquelme playing as playmaker.

Serbia and Montenegro will be without influential Manchester United central defender Nemanja Vidic who has been ruled out of their entire campaign with a knee injury. Vidic also missed their opening encounter with the Dutch and it remains to be seen how they cope up with his absence. The Serbian defence had big, big problems with Arjen Robben running circles around them in the game with the Dutch and one wonders how they may cope up with Riquelme, Messi and company. The Serbian forward line didn't really make the most of their chances in the opening game and a similar performance could well see the Serbs taking the flight out of Germany.

My verdict:
Argentina should win this. They have a slightly weak backline but no other real hurdles for Jose Pekerman's men.
