Brazil versus France World Cup Preview

Frankfurt July 1, 2006 - Brazil/France

My Pick: Brazil

The second of the "Revenge" matches to be taking place on Saturday, the France vs Brazil match promises to be an intriguing affair. Brazil will look to avenge the humiliating 3-0 defeat inflicted upon them by the French 8 years ago in Saint Denis. This game could also be the last for the magician who scored twice for the French in that game, Zinedine Zidane.

Brazil have not really been tested in their games so far. They haven't faced any big name team yet and France pose their first major challenge. They beat Ghana 3-0 to seal their place in the last 8, but that scoreline does not reflect how close that game was. Dida made a couple of brilliant saves when Brazil were 1-0 ahead and had those gone in, the story might well have had a different ending. Brazil however have won all their games so far,and we may be in for a classic Samba performance to silence their critics. Ronaldo has now become the highest scorer in World Cup finals after surpassing German legend Gerd Muller's record of 14 in the game against Ghana. The Brazilian striker missed the 1998 final due to a mysterious illness and will be raring to go against the French. Ronaldinho has had a quiet WC and France will be hoping that he doesn't choose this match to explode.

No real problems for Brazil, but they will be hoping that both Kaka and Emerson will be fully fit. Kaka vs Vieira and Makalele will be a battle worth watching. Robinho has been recovering from the injury which kept him out against Ghana. Inter striker Adriano and defender Juan are on yellows.

France surprised many by reaching this stage. They were far from impressive in the group stages getting through behind Switzerland with two draws and a win. The French beat European underachievers Spain 3-1 in the second round. It was their experience vs Spanish youth and experience prevailed that day in Hannover. The French team are mostly made of people who are 30+ but they are players who on their given day can mesmerise any opposition. Every match the French play is viewed as a possible last match for the midfied great, their captain, Zinedine Zidane. So far, that dreaded moment has not come. Frank Ribery showed why he is considered by many as a natural heir to Zidane in the last game against the Spanish. Brazil will hope that he will not give Roberto Carlos too much work to do. Ribery, Vieira and Zidane are on yellows for France.

My verdict:
Brazil are big time players at the World Cup and are no Spain. So are the French, but I think France have ridden their luck in this tournament. This is the one game I think they will meet their match. Unless Zidane or somebody else puts on a match winning performance.

If Brazil do not win this ,it will be the first time since 1982 that there is no South American team in the semifinals. But I do not think Brazil will follow their neighbours home. I tip Brazil to win and Au Revoir....Les Bleus....
