Brazil versus Ghana World Cup Preview

Dortmund June 27, 2006 - Brazil/Ghana

My Pick: Brazil

World Cup favourites Brazil will look to cement a last 8 spotwhere they face the when they play African newbies Ghana in Dortmund on Tuesday.

The Brazilians were one of the few teams which finished with a 100% win record in the group matches. Their form, although not anywhere near what they can be capable of, has still seen them win three games with relative ease. Their last game against Japan showed glimpses of their deft passes and flicks and Ghana will hope that they would have left that back on the pitch, 5 days ago, in Dortmund. Carlos Parriera used the game against Japan as a match to try out a few things as he rested several of his carded players. Brazil appear to have got progressively better in every game they have played and that does not augur well for Ghana. The good news for Brazil against Japan was the return of Ronaldo to goal scoring mode as the Real Madrid striker equalled Gerd Muller's record of most World Cup goals. He will be looking to go past that mark and cement his place in footballing history. Robinho however is ruled out of this game due to injury. The form of Ronaldo often has a direct effect on Ronaldinho's form and we could see a mesmerising display from the Barcelona playmaker in this game.

Ghana shocked all by qualifying ahead of the fancied Czechs and the USA,both of whom are in the top 5 in the world. They lost to the Azzuri who ended up as group winners but beat both the Czechs and the Americans en route to qualifying for the second round. They play good organised football, are pacy and are technically very sound. Ex Lyon midfielder Michael Essien who has been a rock in midfield, will be however miss this game due to suspension and this is a huge blow for the Africans. That means Fenerbahce midfielder Stephen Appiah will have the added responsibility of filling Essien's boots. Muntari, Matthew Amoah and Gyan Asamoah will be handed the responsibility of getting Dujkovic's side goals.

My verdict:
Shouldn't be a major headache for the World cup champions. They should win this comfortably. I just think the Samba magic will be too much for the Black Stars.
