Netherlands Versus The Ivory Coast World Cup Preview

Stuttgart June 16, 2006 - Netherlands/Ivory Coast

My Pick: Netherlands

World Cup first timers Ivory Coast will be looking to get their first points of the World Cup when they play Marco Van Basten's Dutch side in Stuttgart on Saturday.

Holland for all their attacking flair, only managed to score one against the cautious Serbs. Arjen Robben was their standout person in that game and the Dutch will be looking up to him to inspire them again. There has been some bad blood brewing between the wingers, with Robin Van Persie accusing Robben of being too selfish. Both van Persie and Ruud Van Nistelrooy who were otherwise invisible during the Serbia game will look forward to a better game. So would their midfield compatriot, Barcelona man Mark Van Bommel. For the Dutch, Heitinga and Giovanni Van Bronckhorst are on yellow cards.

Ivory Coast impressed one and all despite their loss to Argentina in their opening encounter. Emmanuele Eboue and Kolo Toure have marshalled their defence well and it remains to be seen whether Eboue can stop Robben. That would be one of the duels to watch. And if the strikers upfront can convert the chances given, there's a good chance they will walk away with something from this game. Of course Robben is not the only threat but he is a player in form and the prime threat.

My verdict:
The Netherlands will be favourites to win this. But the Elephants will be keen to get something out of this and a draw is not improbable.
