Switzerland versus Ukraine World Cup Preview

Cologne June 26, 2006 - Switzerland/Ukraine

My Pick: Ukraine

Switzerland vs Ukraine was not a fixture which was expected by pundits and fans alike in the round of 16, but thats what has precisely happened. Ukraine were expected to finish behind Spain but the Swiss were not expected to finish ahead of France.

The Swiss beat 2002 third placed Turkey on away goals to come to Germany. They finished ahead of France thanks to a 2-0 win over South Korea in their last league game. One of the goal scorers in that game, Arsenal centreback Philippe Senderos, has been ruled out of the World Cup due to injury. It will be a huge disappointment for Senderos who also missed the Champions League final where Arsenal lost to Barcelona. His injury has created a gaping hole in the defence and Koebi Kuhn will look up to Johannes Djorou or Patrick Muller to fill that space. Djourou will then have the unenviable task of marking Europe's most deadly finisher, Chelsea striker Andrei Shevchenko. The Swiss back four did not concede a single goal in their group games and they will be put to test against a formidable Ukranian attack. Hakan Yakin and Alexander Frei will be given the task of scoring, while the likes of Tranquillo Barnetta will be doing the creative work.

Ukraine will be keen to prove to the world that they have other players than Andrei Shevchenko. Most of the Ukranian squad ply their trade in their native land and in Russia and therefore aren't as well known as the players who play for the major European clubs. Oleg Blokhin does have a very talented side consisting of the likes of Voronin, Rebrov and Vorobei. These players will have a key part to play if Ukraine are to reach the last 8. Ukraine will be without the services of suspended duo Andrei Rusol and Viacheslav Sviderski. That leaves Blokhin with a question of whom to play in centre defence.

My verdict:
A game which is quite tough indeed to predict. The absence of Senderos makes Ukraine's task easier and I think they will do enough to secure a win.
