Who runs Betfred online?

This Betfred review is built from the Gambling Commission's public records and the Betfred app listing on the UK App Store. The Commission register shows Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited, account 39544, holding remote licence 039544-R-319290-010. It covers betting on real and virtual events, pool betting, bingo and casino, all active since 1 November 2014. The head office is in Gibraltar, and the register lists three trading names under the account.

On the UK App Store the app is published under the developer name Betfred, with Done Brothers (Cash Betting) Ltd as provider. Both names appear in official records, but the listing does not explain how that company relates to the licensee.

History of Betfred

Betfred began as a single betting shop that Fred Done opened in 1967 in Pendlebury, Salford, with his brother and co-owner Peter, according to a 2017 profile in the trade publication SBC News. Done Bookmakers then spread across Greater Manchester. Done Brothers (Cash Betting) Limited, the company the App Store names as the app's provider, was incorporated on 17 September 1976, according to Companies House.

In June 2011 the government confirmed the sale of the Tote to Betfred, as City AM reported at the time, in a deal headlined at £265 million. It came with an exclusive seven-year licence to run pool betting on all UK racecourses, on condition that pool betting was offered at every approved course.

Betfred did not keep the Tote. In May 2018 it sold a 25% stake to the Alizeti consortium of racehorse owners and breeders, with an option on the remaining 75%, as Gambling Insider reported, and Fred Done noted at the time that the exclusive pool-betting licence would expire that July. The consortium, renamed UK Tote Group, completed the purchase in 2019 and became the Tote's sole owner, according to iGaming Business. In racing, Betfred became sponsor of the Derby and the Oaks at Epsom in 2023 on a three-year deal with the Jockey Club, extended in January 2024 to at least 2026 and to six races across the two days.

What does the Betfred app listing describe?

The listing describes "thousands of markets across 21 Sports". Its Bet Builder combines goals, goalscorers, corners and cards in one football bet, and a Multi-Match Bet Builder combines bet builders across several matches. It also names in-play markets and Cash Out.

Sub Switch is described in the listing: with a qualifying player-based selection in a Bet Builder or single, "If your player is substituted at any point in the match, your selection is switched to the next player." Which markets qualify is not set out in the listing.

For racing, the listing describes Racing Post Spotlight and Key Stats covering all UK and Irish horse and greyhound racing, and predicted line-ups from more than 25 football leagues. It mentions Extra Places and Super Extra Places on selected UK and Irish races, and Best Odds Guaranteed "available daily". Those are the publisher's descriptions; the qualifying races and terms could not be read from a Betfred page.

What stands out

  • The licence covers betting, pool betting, bingo and casino, active since 1 November 2014.
  • The listing describes a Multi-Match Bet Builder and Sub Switch on qualifying player bets.
  • Racing Post Spotlight and Key Stats cover all UK and Irish horse and greyhound racing, according to the listing.
  • The listing describes Extra Places on selected UK and Irish races and daily Best Odds Guaranteed.

Points to check

  • The Commission lists two regulatory actions against the licensee, in May 2025 and June 2026, covered below.
  • The listing does not name the safer-gambling tools in the app; it points to GambleAware and the National Gambling Helpline.
  • Payment methods, limits and withdrawal times could not be read from an official Betfred page.
  • The same app carries casino games and bingo, which this review does not cover.

What has the Gambling Commission published about Betfred's licensee?

On 20 May 2025 the Commission imposed a financial penalty of £240,000 on Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited after investigating a key event the licensee submitted. It found a breach of licence condition 2.3.1 on technical standards. It noted that the licensee identified the breach, reported it proactively, took immediate remedial action and co-operated.

On 30 June 2026 the Commission recorded a settlement after a licence review that followed a compliance assessment in May and June 2024. The review found failings in the licensee's social responsibility controls: breaches of paragraphs 1, 2, 4, 7 and 11 of social responsibility code provision 3.4.3 on remote customer interaction. The licensee agreed to pay £900,000 in lieu of a financial penalty. The licence remains active on the register.

What does the app need?

The listing says the app needs iOS 17.0 or later and works on iPhone and iPad, in English. It calls it a real-money gambling app and gives the National Gambling Helpline number, 0808 8020 133. Its privacy label lists identifiers, usage data and diagnostics.

What else do the register and the app listing add?

Besides betfred.com and betfred.mobi, the register lists www.oddsking.com as an active domain under the same licence, so the OddsKing site is run by Petfre (Gibraltar) Limited too.

The listing says the Racing Post data in the app spans 13 sports and more than 4,000 events a year. Its privacy label is short: Betfred declares no data linked to your identity, lists identifiers as the only data that may be used to track you across other companies' apps, and names usage and diagnostic data collected for analytics and app functionality without being linked to you.

Is Betfred also a high-street bookmaker?

Yes. Gambling Insider put the shop estate at about 1,680 at its 2017 peak. On 31 July 2026 Betfred said it planned to shut 132 shops and cut more than 600 jobs from September, blaming higher taxes and economic uncertainty, which Gambling Insider said would leave about 1,100 shops.

The Android app on Google Play is published by Betfred Technology Limited of Birchwood, Warrington, a company incorporated in January 2017 for gambling and betting activities, according to Companies House; the App Store names Done Brothers (Cash Betting) Limited instead. The Google Play data-safety section declares that no data is collected or shared with third parties, that data is encrypted in transit and that you can ask for it to be deleted. That is the developer's own declaration, and it reads differently from the iOS label described above.
